Drug dealers in Michigan areas may get a rare second chance

It is not often that drug dealers are given a second chance, even for a first offense. A charge of possession with intent to deliver illegal drugs carries the potential for serious penalties, including jail time and other serious consequences. A new program developed at Michigan State University, however, is trying something new. Instead of simply going to jail, dealers are instead given the opportunity to make a more significant change.

Domestic violence increases during the holidays

Every year there is a peak in the numbers of domestic violence calls that police officers respond to in Michigan over the holidays. There are a number of factors that contribute to this escalation, but no matter the circumstances, criminal charges for domestic violence are always serious and never get resolved by themselves.

Increased drunk driving enforcement in Michigan for the holidays

Traveling plays a big part in the holiday season. Between visiting family, last-minute shopping trips and an abundance of parties, people are on the roads more than usual. There are also more events and situations where people are drinking alcohol. The combination of these two common activities, however, has the potential to ruin a holiday season if a person is arrested for drunk driving.

Rate of juvenile arrests may be highest in over 40 years

As many Michigan parents know, it is no surprise that kids make mistakes. They are testing boundaries and limitations and may not fully understand the consequences associated with their mistakes. However, as a child moves into adulthood, the penalties of a misstep can become very serious and involve jail time and a criminal record. According to a recent study, children and young adults under 23-years-old are being arrested for misdemeanors and felonies at a much more significant rate than ever before.

Michigan man charged with running a Ponzi scheme

Last year, a Michigan man decided to start a business. He named it, attracted some investors, and made the investors happy by generating gains which in turn attracted more investors. It sounds like a successful business story. In this case, however, the man who started the business was allegedly committing a white collar crime known as a Ponzi scheme.

Convicted drug dealer has sentence reduced in Michigan court

A Michigan man who was arrested and pleaded guilty for selling cocaine to a Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team informant has had his sentence reduced. He is also seeking a re-sentencing for his crimes, citing a number of factors including miscalculation of a minimum sentence for a drug crime.

New representation granted for Michigan man accused of domestic violence

A Michigan man who is accused of a number of counts including domestic violence is getting a new lawyer. According to reports, the relationship between the man and his previous lawyer deteriorated so completely that the accused man requested the lawyer be removed from his case.

Miss USA winner from Michigan arrested for drunk driving

Most people are unsure how to handle the ramifications of being arrested for OWI or drunk driving. When press and publicity is involved, it can magnify and encourage mistakes that the offender would not otherwise make. In this case, the 2010 Miss USA winner from Michigan is no exception.

Michigan man is guilty of a felony, but which one?

Being charged with a felony can be devastating. It can affect a person's job, relationships and future. As serious as felonies can be, it is critical to establish that the charges are accurate. For one Michigan man, the fact that he may be guilty of a felony is not being challenged. Which felony he may have committed, however, is up for debate.
